What's a notary public?

A notary public is a public officer appointed by the state to serve as an impartial witness to a person’s signature. They are qualified, by law, to perform certain official acts within the boundaries of their appointment.

Some of those acts include taking an oath, witnessing signatures, and stamping or sealing your documents. Simply put, a notary public is a state government third party that you trust to validate the authenticity of your signature. This is important for wills, deeds, contracts, powers of attorney, car titles, and other important documents. The notary will make sure that you are signing the document willingly and are aware of what you are signing. They also make sure that any witnesses sign off on the document as well. It’s an easy way to make sure that the people involved in this process understand what they’re signing up for.
